Welcome to the first episode of Stuff You Should Experience. Let’s begin!
It’s been a great week and I have a fun collection of songs to share with you. Today, we’re listening to two entirely different styles of music. Rock & Roll and EDM (yes, you read that right Electronic Dance Music).
I am going back to the 1970s, the golden age of Rock & Roll. The band that we are listening to was the first all-female band to release an album on a major label. We are listening to Fanny. (Is it just me or there’s a comeback of the 70s fashion for women?)
The song that we are tuning in to is from their album Fanny Hill that released in 1972, it’s called Blind Alley. I personally loved the guitar. That bass at the start gave me goosebumps!

Did you know that this album was recorded at Apple Studios which was founded by The Beatles in 1968? Fanny even remade one of their songs in this album, it’s Hey Bulldog. Arguably, it’s better than the original. They say The Beatles recorded the original song in one single 10hr session.
I have had a funny relationship with Electronic Dance Music. I was an EDM fanatic in school. None of the mornings would go by without listening to it. Over time, my music taste evolved (or I like to say that to myself) and I discovered better (different) music. I never thought EDM would make any profound entry back in my life. Boy was I wrong! Fast forward to the CoronaEra, I am back to my EDM schedule.
But I realized my EDM taste has mellowed down by quite a bit when I developed a deep liking towards the duo, Tinlicker; the face of Dutch progressive dance music. Their music has a certain kind of calmness, but you’d still wanna dance to it. It’s weird, right? That’s what appealed to me the most. (The picture below also hints towards my future hairstyle, btw)
We are listening to a song from their album This is Not Our Universe that was released in 2019. It’s called Lost. Another song that I have been listening to quite often from the same album is Lullaby.

Fun fact, Anjunadeep is the record label of Tinlicker. As you can guess, the name is inspired by the Anjuna Beach in Goa.
What did I read this week?
A while ago, one of my friends recommended me to read Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. Some of you may have read it already. A line that stuck with me for a long time was in the second chapter. It read,
“Not so much like drops of water, though water, it is true, can wear holes in the hardest granite; rather, drops of liquid sealing-wax, drops that adhere, incrust, incorporate themselves with what they fall on, till finally, the rock is all one scarlet blob”.
It’s a metaphor for hypnopaedia, the science of sleep teaching, which in the book is used for human conditioning. They use it to bury a human’s individuality, at scale. In real life, I wonder how many different types of, social or otherwise, conditioning have we undergone unconsciously? If we were to find out, I don’t think any of us could truly be called an “individual”. Perhaps.
A fascinating novel, do give it a read if you haven’t.
What am I thinking about?
What would happen if you make a spiritual scholar and a scientist talk to each other? Within minutes they’d walk away thinking that the other is utterly ignorant. Maybe not. I will attempt to share an answer to this on Wednesday.
Have a really nice Saturday… :)
I started SYSE to recommend music and share some unfiltered thoughts. I’d love your feedback, questions, and comments.
SYSE: Episode 1
Already started listening to those music recommendations! Looking forward to many more :)
So well-written. It's cute, short and heart-warming.
Made for a good busy Saturday read. Short and enjoyable!
